Everyday cleaning
For most fine jewelry, a gentle bath is all you need. Soak the piece for ten to fifteen minutes in lukewarm water with a little mild dish soap. Brush gently around the prongs and settings with a soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly, then pat dry with a lint-free cloth and let it air dry fully before storing. Pearls and soft or porous stones such as opal and turquoise should never be soaked. Instead, wipe them gently with a damp cloth.
Storage and daily habits
A few small habits protect your jewelry for years. Store pieces separately in soft pouches or lined boxes so they cannot scratch one another. Remove jewelry before swimming, exercising, gardening, and cleaning. Apply lotion and perfume first and put your jewelry on afterward, never the other way around. Avoid keeping pieces in bathrooms or in direct sunlight, where humidity and heat can take a toll over time.
Caring for diamonds
Diamonds are famously hard, yet they are not indestructible. A sharp blow to a corner or edge can still chip or fracture a stone, so treat your ring with everyday care. Chlorine in pools and hot tubs can damage the metal that holds a diamond in place. Because oils from your fingers dull a diamond's brilliance, handle stones by the edges and clean them regularly.
Caring for gemstones
Colored gemstones ask for a gentler touch. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can be too harsh for many stones. Treated stones in particular should only ever meet mild soap and water, never heat, chemicals, or ultrasonic cleaning. When in doubt, choose the mildest method and clean less rather than more.
